What is Dry Needling?
Dry needling is a technique used by physiotherapists to assist with reducing muscular pain and tightness in trigger points within the muscle. It is termed ‘dry’ as it doesn’t involve the injection of any substance. Thin needles are inserted into the skin into muscular trigger points, they are used to increase blood flow, aid with cellular repair and assist in desensitizing the central nervous system to pain signals.
Does Dry Needling hurt?
Most people will feel the pin-prick like sensation as the needle breaks the skin and some people will feel a deep, dull ache as the needle reaches the trigger point. This process should not be intensely painful and you should inform your physiotherapist if you are experiencing pain.
Can I still exercise after dry needling?
Depending on the location, your physiotherapist may recommended that if you have dry needling of one hip or leg and not the other that you avoid running or sports for the rest of the day of treatment. This is due to the slight possibility of a minor muscular imbalance between the two sides which will be more apparent with loaded exercise. You are fine to continue other exercise on the day of treatment and return to normal the following day.
